Upcoming Seminar: Scientific Research with Extreme Light: Opportunities and Challenges

Date: 13 - 01 - 2025

On January 17, 2025 (Friday), from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the first in-person seminar in the series "Scientific Research with Extreme Light: Opportunities and Challenges" will take place at the Conference Hall of the Institute of Solid State Physics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia.

This seminar is part of the "Extreme Light" project – ELI-ERIC-BG, a national scientific infrastructure listed in the 2020–2027 National Roadmap for Research Infrastructures.

The seminar is primarily aimed at students, young researchers, and academics, focusing on the following key topics, presented by Assoc. Prof. Ekaterina Yordanova, Director of the Institute of Solid State Physics – BAS, and Prof. Lyubomir Kovachev, Institute of Electronics – BAS:

  • Physics of ultrafast lasers, types of laser systems, their operating principles, and applications.
  • Introduction to ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure – European Research Infrastructure Consortium) – a pan-European research infrastructure offering unique opportunities for high-power laser research.
  • The mission of ELI-ERIC and the benefits for Bulgaria from full membership in the consortium.
  • Laboratory laser infrastructure of ELI-ERIC in Bulgaria.
  • Examples of successful projects and research with extreme light.
  • Opportunities and challenges for Bulgarian scientists and researchers.

Guest Speaker:
Prof. Jean-Claude Kieffer (National Institute for Scientific Research, Quebec, Canada – INRS, and ELI representative).
Lecture Topics:

  • Laser-based electron acceleration: Current status, perspectives, and ELI positioning.
  • The EuPRAXIA project (European Plasma Research Accelerator with Excellence in Applications) – Europe's first research infrastructure project for particle accelerators based on innovative laser and linear technologies.

Laboratory Visits:
After the seminar session, students and young researchers will have the opportunity to visit the laser laboratories of the Institute of Solid State Physics and familiarize themselves with the equipment and research areas.
